ENT Symptoms in Primary Care

Most sore throats and sinus symptoms are viral and improve with supportive care. An in-person evaluation may help when symptoms are persistent, severe, or not improving as expected

Home care

  • Fluids, rest, salt-water gargles
  • Honey/lemon tea (no honey under age 1)
  • Nasal saline rinse/spray, humidifier
  • Over-the-counter symptom relief as directed if appropriate for you

When to book a visit

  • Severe throat pain or trouble swallowing
  • Persistent fever
  • Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
  • Symptoms that worsen after improving
  • Ear pain with fever or significant hearing change

Strep throat basics

  • If symptoms clearly fit a common viral illness, home care is often enough at first. If symptoms are more severe, persistent, or not following the usual pattern, an in-person visit may help determine whether further evaluation is needed

Urgent care now

  • Trouble breathing
  • Drooling or inability to swallow liquids
  • Dehydration
  • Confusion
  • Severe swelling
  • Severe neck stiffness
