Most sore throats and sinus symptoms are viral and improve with supportive care. An in-person evaluation may help when symptoms are persistent, severe, or not improving as expected
Home care
- Fluids, rest, salt-water gargles
- Honey/lemon tea (no honey under age 1)
- Nasal saline rinse/spray, humidifier
- Over-the-counter symptom relief as directed if appropriate for you
When to book a visit
- Severe throat pain or trouble swallowing
- Persistent fever
- Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
- Symptoms that worsen after improving
- Ear pain with fever or significant hearing change
Strep throat basics
- If symptoms clearly fit a common viral illness, home care is often enough at first. If symptoms are more severe, persistent, or not following the usual pattern, an in-person visit may help determine whether further evaluation is needed
Urgent care now
- Trouble breathing
- Drooling or inability to swallow liquids
- Dehydration
- Confusion
- Severe swelling
- Severe neck stiffness
